Multi Storey Steel Buildings

Steel frame construction is a popular structural form for multi-story buildings due to its versatility.

A multi-storey building, also known as a high-rise building, is a building with multiple floors or levels. Typically, a multi-storey building has more than three floors, and often contains residential, commercial, or office spaces. Multi-storey buildings are constructed using steel, reinforced concrete, or a combination of both.

These buildings often require specialized designs and engineering to ensure their structural integrity, as well as other features like elevators, fire safety measures, and HVAC systems. The height of a multi-storey building can vary greatly, from just a few stories to over 100 stories.

Multi-storey buildings have become increasingly popular in urban areas due to the limited availability of space for construction. They can also provide efficient use of space and create a high-density environment. However, building taller structures also comes with its own set of challenges, such as wind loads, vibration, and earthquake resistance.

STRUCTURAL PRINCIPLES

Structural principles refer to the fundamental concepts and guidelines that are used in designing and constructing buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure their stability, safety, and durability.

FACTORS AFFECTING CHOICE OF STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

The structure, envelope, services, and finishes should all be integrated in the plan. The main decisions are building usefulness integration and external wall construction.

FLOOR SYSTEMS

A floor system is a structural component of a building that supports the weight of the building and its contents. It consists of a series of interconnected beams, joists, and supports that distribute the load of the building to the foundation or subfloor below.

The term "floor systems" can refer to different types of structural systems, such as wood framing, steel framing, or concrete slab systems. The choice of floor system depends on factors such as the building's size and intended use, the local building codes and regulations, and the available materials and construction techniques.

FRAMING SCHEMATICS FOR A COMPLETE BUILDING STRUCTURE

The established composite system and the Slimdek system are the most common forms of complete building structure in steel construction.

VERTICAL BRACING SYSTEMS

To provide lateral stability, a range of structural shapes can be used. Shear walls, lattice frames, and rigid frames are the most common systems, but more sophisticated systems may be required for very tall structures.

COMPONENTS & ACCESSORIES

Modern steel buildings are made up of light weight steel components with a wide span, and their optimised steel design reduces weight while meeting all design criteria requirements. It is the most cost-effective and appropriate solution for modern-day building needs.
PEB components are combined with civil construction to create prefabricated buildings with major applications such as industrial sheds, canopies, and warehouses. It is the most common, cost-effective, light-weight, and time-efficient solution to common building needs.

MAIN FRAME

Frames are frequently used in the PEB industry to refer to primary built-up and hot rolled members. Constant depth or tapered depth built-up members typically account for more than 90% of frame weight, with hot rolled members accounting for the remaining 10%.

It is the most common, cost-effective, light-weight, and time-efficient solution to modern building needs. Eave struts are located at the building's eaves (corner of roof and wall sheeting along sidewalls), and they provide bracing for frames as well as support for roof and wall panels.

INSULATED SANDWICH PANELS

The Insulated Sandwich Panel stands on its own. It is commonly used for cold storages, refrigerated rooms, telecom shelters, and insulation in industrial and commercial cladding.

Insulated sandwich panels are a type of building material that consists of two outer layers of a rigid material, such as steel or aluminum, and an inner layer of insulation, such as foam or fiberglass. These layers are bonded together to form a single panel, creating a highly efficient insulation system that is often used in the construction of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings.

TRIMS AND FLASHING

Eave trim, eave gutter downspouts, gable trim, curved eave panels, flashing around building accessories, and so on are examples of trims and flashing. Which are made from prepainted aluzinc coated steel or aluminium sheets bent to shape with roll formers, presses, or folding machines. They help to weatherproof the building and add to the neat finish appearance of a PEB. Sliding doors, rollup doors, personnel doors, fibreglass insulation, sand trap louvres, windows, and ridge ventilators are examples of building accessories and special buyouts (SBOs). Some are made in-house. Some are obtained from suppliers and are part of our single source supply.

Advantages

  • Due to the cost saving in initial foundation and infrastructure costs, multi-story buildings are a cost-     effective solution.

  • Because of the ease of installation, it reduces construction time.

  • Multi-story buildings are extremely strong and long-lasting, as well as earthquake and weather resistant.

  • There are fewer dead loads than in conventional concrete buildings.

  • The requirement for fewer columns allows for the construction of larger spaces.

  • It is an environmentally friendly solution because the steel structures are 100% recyclable and do not   result in material waste or pollution.

  • It is corrosion resistant and requires little upkeep.

Features

Multi-storey buildings have become increasingly popular due to the growing demand for space in urban areas. Here are some of the notable features of multi-storey buildings:

  1. Efficient use of space: Multi-storey buildings are designed to maximize the available space. By building upwards, you can fit more units or offices in a smaller footprint, which makes them an ideal choice for densely populated areas.

  2. Increased accessibility: Multi-storey buildings often have elevators and ramps, which provide easy access to different levels of the building. This makes them more accessible to people with disabilities, the elderly, and those who find it difficult to climb stairs.

  3. Improved energy efficiency: Multi-storey buildings can be designed to be energy-efficient, with features such as insulated walls, double-glazed windows, and high-efficiency HVAC systems. This can reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills.

  4. Enhanced security: Multi-storey buildings often have security features such as access control systems, CCTV cameras, and security personnel, which can help keep occupants and their belongings safe.

  5. Flexible design: Multi-storey buildings can be designed to accommodate a variety of uses, including residential, commercial, and mixed-use. The design can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the occupants, whether it be open-plan offices, apartments, or retail spaces.

  6. Increased property value: Multi-storey buildings are often more valuable than single-story buildings due to their increased potential for generating rental income. This makes them a good investment for property developers and investors.

Overall, multi-storey buildings offer a range of benefits, including increased accessibility, improved energy efficiency, enhanced security, and greater flexibility in design. These features make them an attractive option for a wide range of users, from businesses and developers to homeowners and renters.
